The area has been, and continues to be, one of the chief holiday destinations for the Spaniards and Portuguese.
The towns and villages in the surrounding area retain their local traditions and hospitality and are a great place to while away an evening mingling with the locals, eating Tapas, which are delicious and tasty and such good value.

It is a very picturesque, traditional Spanish town situated at the mouth of the Guadiana River, said to be the second largest river in Europe. The tranquil atmosphere facilitates the full enjoyment of the restaurants, shops and squares.
A facility introduced a few years ago which has proved to be a great success is the Guadiana river trip. This is a day long cruise of almost 40 miles up the Guadiana river between Portugal and Spain which takes you into the traditional interior of the peninsula. This is an area which has been largely cut of from the rest of country and indeed still is to a degree. Signs of old hardships are still to be seen. It is fascinating to observe the changing lush vegation and diverse birdlife such as the king heron, the black stork, spoonbill, etc. as one moves inland through the changing salt and sweet waters of the river.
One of the highlights of the day is to sit back and enjoy the inclusive, delicious, traditional and sumptuous lunch in the beautiful destination town of Sanlucar de Guadiana. The river boat then crosses the river to the twin Portugese town of Alcoutim where some of the local delicasies and souvenires may be sampled, before turning back towards Ayamonte.
At the marina there are also a busy schedule of shorter trips up the river, or out to sea. There is also a 10 minute ferry from Ayamonte across to Portugal, which runs for most of the day.
